If you're interested in becoming a biokineticist in South Africa, here’s a comprehensive guide covering everything from what biokinetics entails to the steps for entering this field.

What is Biokinetics?

Biokinetics, which translates to “life through movement,” is a profession that applies scientifically based exercise to prevent or manage diseases and assist with rehabilitation. Biokineticists design customized exercise programs to help people improve physical functionality, manage chronic conditions, and enhance overall quality of life. Their work can benefit patients recovering from surgery, managing diseases or working to improve fitness and mobility

Biokinetics vs. Physiotherapy

While both biokineticists and physiotherapists work in rehabilitation, their focus areas differ. Physiotherapy generally addresses the acute phase of injury recovery, focusing on pain relief, physical therapy, and early recovery. Biokinetics, however, is geared towards the "final phase" of rehabilitation and long-term health management through exercise, helping clients build strength and return to full functionality after injury or illness

Educational Requirements

To become a biokineticist in South Africa, you’ll need a degree in Health Sciences with a specialization in Biokinetics. The general path is as follows:

  1. Bachelor’s Degree: Enroll in a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Sport Sciences.

  2. Honours Degree: After obtaining a bachelor’s degree, complete a Bachelor of Sciences with Honours in Biokinetics, which includes practical training.

  3. Internship: A one-year internship, typically integrated with the honours program, is required to gain practical experience.

  4. Registration: Register with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) to practice as a biokineticist

(Each university may have specific requirements, so it’s best to contact your chosen institution directly to confirm the exact steps needed to qualify as a biokineticist.)

Career Opportunities and Salary

Biokineticists work in private practices, rehabilitation centers, corporate wellness programs, and even sports teams. Starting salaries for newly qualified biokineticists are generally between R150,000 and R250,000 annually, depending on location and employer. With experience, salaries can increase, especially for those who open private practices or specialize in sports and high-performance training

Biokinetics Courses and Institutions

Several South African universities offer accredited biokinetics programs, including the University of Stellenbosch, University of the Western Cape, University of the Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, and North-West University. Coursework typically includes subjects like human physiology, biomechanics, and exercise science, providing a strong foundation in health sciences

Studying biokinetics offers a rewarding path for those passionate about health, fitness, and helping others achieve their physical best. For more information, the Biokinetics Association of South Africa (BASA) provides additional resources and guidance on how to pursue this career path.
